My Silent Struggle: Postpartum Depression

In the latest episode of Giving Voice to Depression, entitled “Supporting Mom After Birth—Postpartum Depression – Pt. 2,” I share my incredibly personal experience of postpartum depression (PPD). With an awareness of PPD’s symptoms, I nonetheless took no notice of my troubles, instead blaming them on the adjustments that motherhood brings.

The Mask of Strength: My Silence

Like numerous other mothers who are going through PPD, I wrestled with admitting my emotions at first because they could seem like a sign of weakness. In addition, I think about how society and family backgrounds usually prevent people from seeking help regarding mental health issues.

It was not until therapy and self-expression that I discovered acceptance and proactive management for my PPD. Early communication and support become key here; using myself as an example, it is amazing how reaching out can completely change one’s life, which matters.

This twenty-one-minute segment highlights the myriad symptoms of postpartum depression and, therein, their associations with individual/family history alongside unwavering support/understanding from those near at heart.

A Call to Action: Breaking the Silence

As Mother’s Day approaches, let us acknowledge those mothers silently fighting PPD or standing up to listen. Let us break open this silence surrounding postnatal syndrome so that there is no lone voice for healing among women who have just borne children.
